41 In early May, Manley expresses his continued frustration at his brothers’ neglect: ‘If I were sure Jacke was in towne, he should hare from me, but neither hee nor Frank are kind’. 42 By late May, Manley seems to have had no response about the clothes, since he again demands that Dorislaus ‘Send mee the things I wrote to you for with the first’. 43 This last request, to which Dorislaus seems not to have responded to in any haste (if at all), is the only hint we have of Roger 34 A Political Biography of Delarivier Manley Manley’s romantic life.

Manley reports to Dorislaus on 21 August [1654] that ‘the king’s trayne is not great, but in very good equipage’; he also describes the retinue of exiled courtiers as, for the most part ‘slaves of as little magnitude as influence’, who ‘rather wish then contribute to the doing of their master’s businesse’. Manley also reports that this court has now removed to Aachen, ‘under pretence of bathing’ and then probably ‘to Collen’ [Cologne] for ‘50,000 l. 33 In a letter dated November 1656, Manley reports to Dorislaus on his progress in learning languages, particularly Latin and Dutch, which he would presumably need for his espionage work.
